Starting out in Outer Wilds can feel a bit overwhelming. There is so much to explore and very few limitations.
The game will try to guide you in the right direction, but there is nothing stopping you from doing essentially anything you want.
This caused a lot of problems for me when I first played. I uncovered the story in the wrong order, making everything very confusing and hard to keep track of.
This is part of the experience, though. You are meant to explore the Outer Wilds however you want.
It helps to follow the story, but it’s just as fun to pave your own path.
Timber Hearth:

Players first wake up in the village on Timber Hearth, the home planet of the Hearthians.
This area serves as the tutorial for the game, introducing you to the lore and just about every mechanic.
Your primary goal in the village is to acquire the launch codes from the Observatory. Along the way, you encounter all the information you need to start your journey.
The problem is, it is very easy to skip past all these crucial details. While this may be ideal for speedrunners, it can make the game significantly more difficult for new players.
When I first played, I tried to collect as much information as possible but, eventually, gave up. This resulted in a lot of confusion when I started exploring the Outer Wilds.
I had no clue how to use the Scout Launcher, an essential tool. I didn’t understand how dangerous Ghost Matter is. These things made my journey significantly more difficult.
There were also issues with understanding the lore. I didn’t have the patience to read every single thing, creating a lot of gaps in the story.
Remember, your goal is to uncover the secrets of an ancient civilization. You’re solving a mystery. Despite this, the game will guide you in the right direction.
When NPCs urge you to talk to Gabbro on Giant’s Deep, you should probably listen. When you learn that your Signalscope can be used to locate different frequencies, you should take advantage of it.
All these tools and tricks set you up for success. Without them, the game becomes a nearly impossible puzzle to solve.
